Yes folks, it’s almost that time again. Fat little cupids flying around shooting love arrows in innocent peoples’ butts, sugary sentiments on sugary treats, doilies cut into hearts and dropped into your classmate’s bag. That’s right, I’m talking about Valentine’s Day! I know, I know, a collective groan from the audience, I used to be that person too. But you must admit that some of the greatest romantic moments of all time have come to us via the silver screen and what better time to celebrate that than February? True, one of my best Valentine’s dates was the year my sweet husband took us out to dinner and to see the twisted and wonderful “Hannibal”, but some folks like their love stories a bit more smushy. For those die hard romantics out there, here are my Top 14 Kissy Flicks, just in time for February 14. May I suggest a bottle of wine, a blanket built for two and any of the following: “Lady and the Tramp”, “Bull Durham”, “Shakespeare in Love”, “Say Anything”, “Love Actually”, “When Harry Met Sally”, “Hope Floats”, “Don Juan Demarco”, “Moulin Rouge”, “The Wedding Singer”, “Casablanca”, “West Side Story”, “The Notebook”, “Enchanted”. Wednesday, June 10th, 2009I myself am a musical theater queen from way back, so watching the Tony’s on Sunday really put me in a musical mood. Now, I know that some people say they “hate musicals”. My friend Jonny says it bugs him that someone always turns to the audience and sings, “…can’t you see?”. However, I know that deep down there is something about a good musical that appeals to everyone. In the mood for a boy’s night with the fellas? “West Side Story”. Girl’s night with your BFF? “Chicago”. Poker night? “Guys and Dolls”. Garden club fund raiser? “Little Shop of Horrors”! Yes, I could do this for hours. Seriously though, movie musical events are awesome, be sure and hand out copies of the song lyrics so everyone can sing along, throw in some glowsticks and you have yourself a party they’ll be singing about for years! Wednesday, March 4th, 2009Call them what you want; Movies, Films, Cinema, Moving Pictures, Talkies, they are magic. I love movies, always have, always will. I was explaining to my little boy who was scared by a scene in “Curious George” the other day that that was a sign of a good movie. Movies make us FEEL things. Good movies make us feel things deeply. Great movies can impact the way we feel. Sharing a movie you love with someone you love is a great way to spend an evening. Five movies I can’t wait to see with my sons in the coming years, off the top of my head: “Jaws”, “West Side Story”, “Indiana Jones”, “Star Wars”, “Stripes”.
